Buying bed pillows? Here is what you must look out for

Your choice of bed pillows is important. It can make all the difference in the quality of your sleep. Remember that the average person spends about a third of their time each day asleep.  With so many pillows in the market and each brand staking its claim to having the best pillows, you need a systematic approach if you are going to get a bed pillow that is indeed value for money. Some websites can help you with comparison but here are a few pointers.

Your first decision is on the size of the pillow. This is usually determined by the bed size. A standard pillow should suffice on a twin sized bed. For the king and queen sized beds, you will need two pillows each of king and queen sizes respectively.  That said, there is nothing preventing you from getting a king size pillow for a twin size bed. You could also go for 4 to 6 standard bed pillows for a king sized bed instead of buying the 2 king sized ones. Ultimately, it boils down to preference.

The cost of bed pillows ranges from as low as $5 to well over $100 for the top luxury brands. Unless cost is not top on your list of considerations, you will need to have set a budget of how much you intend to spend on the pillows. Whereas on average, a $100 pillow is of higher quality than a $5 pillow, paying a lot for a bed pillow is no guarantee that you are getting the best pillows. Do not ignore the pillows in the medium price ranges as there may not be substantial difference in their quality from the most expensive brands.

Your sleep posture will determine which bed pillows would be best for you. If you usually sleep facing up, the flat bed pillow would be most ideal. But if you sleep on your stomach or your side, the flat bed pillow will not provide the neck support you require – you’ll need a thicker pillow. It is difficult to judge the suitability of a pillow just by observation so make sure you try it out before you buy – most stores will not mind.

What type of fill do you prefer? Foam filled pillows are firm and retain their shape. Down-filled pillows on the other hand are soft will crumple up relatively easily. Polyester-filled pillows are a compromise for those that do not fancy the extreme hardness of foam or the extreme softness of down pillows.
